What is edition?

An edition is one publisher's line of a series: the same pages, the same format, and the same numbering. VIZ's Vagabond singles and VIZ's VIZBIG omnibuses are two editions of one series.

Collectors collide on this word because shops, databases, and reading trackers use it loosely. In Hondana an edition is the line of books, not a single volume and not a printing. One Piece singles and the One Piece omnibus are different editions even though both are published by VIZ Media.

The edition decides what the number on the spine means. Naruto volume 1 of the singles is a thin paperback. Naruto volume 1 of the 3-in-1 is a thicker book that reprints the first three singles. Logging both as “Naruto 1” makes a shelf look complete when it is not, or double-counts a story you only own once.

Hondana keeps the series, the edition, and the volume range as separate fields. A barcode that is already in the catalog resolves to one edition. A cover photo may only suggest one, and nothing is written until you confirm.
