Glossary
The words on a manga shelf are doing more work than they look. These are the meanings Hondana uses, so a volume number always belongs to an edition.
- Edition
- An edition is one publisher's line of a series: the same pages, the same format, and the same numbering. VIZ's Vagabond singles and VIZ's VIZBIG omnibuses are two editions of one series.
- Printing
- A printing is one manufacturing run of a volume that already has an edition. The second printing of Death Note volume 1 is the same edition as the first, and it is still a different copy.
- Omnibus
- An omnibus binds two or more volumes of a series into one physical book. A 3-in-1 is an omnibus. It counts as one book on the shelf and as a range of volumes in the story.
- VIZBIG
- VIZBIG is VIZ Media's oversized omnibus line. For Vagabond it is 12 books covering the 37 singles, three story volumes to a book.
- Obi
- An obi is the paper band around a Japanese book. In Hondana the same word is the short label for a collected format, such as 3-in-1 or 2-in-1, shown on a shelf entry.
- Tsundoku
- Tsundoku is the pile of books you own and have not read. Hondana keeps that pile one tap away by storing possession and reading as two fields.
- ISBN
- An ISBN is the 13-digit identity of a specific book, printed as a barcode. Hondana uses it to find an edition and a volume without asking a model to guess.
- Possession and reading
- Possession says whether the book is on your shelf. Reading says whether you have read it. They are independent, so an owned book can be unread and a wanted book can already be finished.
