Questions collectors actually ask
What is Hondana?
Hondana is a shelf for the manga and light novels you physically own. It records the edition, the volume range, and the printing, and it keeps “owned” separate from “read.” A book already in the catalog is matched from its barcode and never sent to a model.
Is scanning a barcode free?
Yes. Barcode adds and typing a book in are free, with no monthly cap. If the ISBN is already in the catalog, the add is a lookup: series, edition, volume range, and printing. It does not use one of your cover-photo scans.
What is the difference between owned and read?
Possession says the book is on your shelf or still on a want list. Reading says you have not started it, you are in it, or you have finished it. An owned unread book is the tsundoku pile. A wanted book can already be finished, if you read a copy you do not own.
How does a cover photo add work?
Photograph the front cover when there is no usable barcode. A vision model proposes the series, edition, and volume. You confirm or reject that proposal, and nothing is written before you do. Free accounts get 10 of these scans a month. Pro gets 50 a day. The image file is not stored; a hash and the model's text are.
Can I export my shelf?
Yes, on every plan. CSV export includes the series, edition, volume range, possession, and reading status. Notes and purchase dates stay out of the public shelf, and you can delete the account, which removes the shelf.
How is Hondana different from MyAnimeList?
MyAnimeList tracks whether you have read a series. Hondana tracks which physical edition is on the shelf, including omnibuses and printings. You can import a MyAnimeList list as a starting point, then confirm the editions the list does not know.
